A highly efficient demand-side production of energy services is a major pre-condition for a sustainable economy.
The core objective of this research project is to assess the potential for energy efficiency increases of major demand-side conversion technologies for the provision of electricity-based energy services. This analysis will be conducted for the time period until 2030+ and will be based on an economic, energetic and ecological evaluation. As a result the technologies of highest priority are extracted, classified and ranked by priority. Finally, a portfolio of strategies will be identified to achieve these potential.
The analysis considers the most important current and for the future expected energy services based on the input of electricity in the sectors private households, industry and services. An important selection criterion is the current and for the future expected share of the service in electricity consumption. That is to say, the higher the share is, the more important it is to consider a specific technology in the analysis.
Derived from this analysis technical and economic electricity conservation portfolios will be calculated. Using an economic assessment approach cost curves for energy conservation potentials are created allowing an appraisal of the relation of overall costs required to meet certain specific energy conservation targets. Investment costs developments and efficiency increases are based on technological learning. For the overall economic analysis of the electricity conservation costs different scenarios of the retail electricity market price development are used.
In this investigation fundamental technologies as well as end use technologies incl. operation times and also electricity consumption management- and surveillance and management technologies are analysed.
The analysis is based on a dynamic model considering stocks of appliances and equipment, renewal rates, saturation and substitution effects of the different technologies on a yearly basis up to 2030+ for Austria. For all technologies at least the average electricity consumption of the stock as well as the average consumption of new and best new appliances is considered. Furthermore, the dynamics of the development of the level of service consumption and the yearly operation time are investigated.
