Gerhard Totschnig is senior researcher at Energy Economics Group (EEG). Before he worked as research scholar at the Environmentally Compatible Energy Strategies Program at International Institute of Applied System Analysis (IIASA). He received his PhD in chemical engineering, fuel, and environmental technology in 2002 from the Vienna University of Technology and studied Theoretical Physics and Mathematics at the Vienna University of Technology. During his PhD studies he has been a guest researcher at High Temperature Gas Dynamics Laboratory at the Stanford University.

Gerhard Totschnig’s main research interests are the modeling of the optimal integration of renewables into the power system, optimal investment planning strategies, uncertainty management with perfect foresight models and the interplay between demand side, supply side and transmission options for RES-E integration. He has comprehensive experience using linear- and mixed integer programming techniques for energy system modeling and optimization. He has been involved in several European and international energy system analysis projects and has extensive experience in project management.
